1994 called, it wants its look back

One of my favorite movies of all time is Cameron Crowe's Singles. Released in 1992 at the height of grunge music and the fixation on all things Seattle, this movie was like the Bible of Cool for high school me. The funny thing is that while the appeal of other "Bible of Cool" movies, books and bands faded once I exceeded the target age, Singles has only gotten lovelier with age. It's touching, it's witty, it's smart and sentimental -- pretty much the same quality of another favorite Cameron Crowe movie, Say Anything

That early 90s era signifies something simpler and easier for me, so when I'm feeling a little in-over-my-head, I evoke the grunge look. Like this:
Grunge basics: black, check; denim, check; chunky shoes, check; odd florals, check; and butch accessories, check.

I'm off to watch Mudhoney, let's go!
Credits: Denim jacket, bought from the Cuenca bazaar in 1996 (vintage!), knit top, Landmark knits section; skirt, Sinequanone (thrifted from Magarbo); tights, SM Department Store; accessories, eQuip and Bosquejo.

Make up channels the 90s too:
Matte face, defined eyebrows (c/o brown Avon Eyebrow Pencil), a bit of eyeliner to define the eyelids, and most importantly, a strong, richly-hued lip -- this is a combination of Avon Celebrity Red and Maybelline Moisture Extreme in Cranberry (for that perfect bloody grunge red-brown). Now let's blast some Pearl Jam and go look for some vinyl, stat!

For me, Singles remains the most compelling argument why I should visit Seattle.

Right! I read an NY Times piece though on iconic Seattle landmarks and clubs, and lots of them are gone! *sadface*
