Fashion Prom

I live for Awards Season (back-to-back weeks of the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Brit Awards etc capped off the by the Oscars) for the red carpet extravaganza; but even those seemingly endless weeks of coverage pales in comparison to the annual Met Gala (aka the Met Ball, or more properly, the Costume Institute Gala), aptly nicknamed Fashion's Prom.

If you want to see major fashion Moments with a capital M, this is the event! Designers are there with their favorite muses in clothes showcasing trends so forward-looking it's like time travel. As Vogue gushingly puts it, "It only happens once a year, yet the impact it leaves on fashion lasts for years to come." (Do read the party and after party coverage if you're particularly missing Diana Vreeland; Girls of a Certain Age says it's so "insidery and slick and glossy you might slip if you’re not careful."

And what were my favorite Fashion Moments, Capital F and M? Why, I thought you'd never ask!
Coco Rocha in a vintage Givenchy pantsuit, bought, no less, from Liz Taylor's auction!

China Chow, stunning in this Art Deco building of a dress.

Meh on Beyonce's sheer Givenchy; Solange Knowle's cheerful Rachel Roy dress is where it's at!

Smile, Kirsten Dunst! Your Rodarte dress is so Katherine Hepburn fab!

Christina Ricci's Thakoon dress is a philosophical conundrum: high waist pencil skirt AND strapless midriff top AND giant bow on the back. Lovett!

Rosario Dawson was in a lovely cowl neck leather gown, but after Rihanna appeared in this Tom Ford, there was only one Animal Skin Dress of the Night.

Elizabeth Banks in MARY KATRANTZOU!!! Just when I thought no one would be ballsy enough to wear Mary K, she BRINGS IT!

Karolina Kourkova, in Rachel Zoe, is so contrabida fantastic, I almost want her to throw a glass of water in my face and hiss, "I will DESTROY you."

For my money, only Rooney Mara made the sheer skirt thing work on that red carpet.

Anja Rubik...hahah actually I was just messing with you. This is RIDICULOUS.

For more Met Gala red carpet, with judgement, I implore you to check:
