Holiday countdown

The week is winding down and I'm frantically trying to tie up all the loose ends before we go on break, so sorry for the dearth of interesting posts.

But instead of a quick outfit post I thought I'd share my most current obsession with you -- Freaks & Geeks. It's the critically acclaimed TV show by Paul Feig and Judd Apatow (the team behind Bridesmaids) that, unfortunately did not make it past the first season. (Airing in 1999-2000 it was ahead of its time.) It also launched the careers of James Franco, Jason Segel, Seth Rogen, John Francis Daley, Busy Philips, Martin Starr and arguably Apatow and Feig

I'd been hearing about this show for such a long time but only started seriously checking it out after Vanity Fair did an Oral History on it (by the way I love Vanity Fair's Oral History features; you should also check out the one they did for Friends). Thankfully all 18 episodes of Freaks & Geeks are up on YouTube.

So far, the episode below (9 - We've Got Spirit) is my favorite. It's amazing how, despite the fact that I went to high school in the Philippines and pep rallies that the whole town goes nuts over is not something I experienced, how accurate this show is in depicting the high school experience. I love the awkwardness of teenage relationships and the pain of break-ups -- even when you're not really in love -- because the rejection goes beyond the relationship: it reflects on you, too. There's also that kernel of truth that movies make out the high school experience into this cartoony, standard, brightly colored journey, when the truth is more complicated and shaded than that. Whether you were popular or not, we all had moments of self-doubt and times when we asked ourselves "what the hell is going on?" Aside from that heavy stuff, this is also a hilarious episode with the creepy school mascot! Because it's my current obsession, I like to end each episode by reading Paul Feig's walkthrough for AV Club.

So please watch this and let me know what you think. Come be obsessed with meeee! Enjoy!
